Labyrinth and the Worst Witch
Tuesday, March 6, 2007I have every reason to believe that J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter is somehow inspired by the movie, Labyrinth, a Jim Henson and Lucas Film production. Ever seen that movie? It stars Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie. Funny part is that there's this dwarf character named Hoggle and Sarah (Connelly's character) even called him, "Hogwart" when he didn't want to help her through the labyrinth. another similarity is the white owl character in the movie, when it's in its human form will turn into Jareth, the King of the Goblin City.
After watching and pondering on some movies that are somewhat akin to the Harry Potter story, a movie/TV series came to mind. My childhood friend, Rodalyn and I used to play "The Worst Witch (1986),"We would imagine ourselves as Mildred Hubble and her best friend Enid… cooking up potions and riding on walis tingting as our broomsticks for transportation as well as hating the antagonist character Ethel Hallow. It was even written 23 years before Harry Potter even existed. I wished I'd see that movie again, or at least the TV series for that matter.
boy, do I love the 80s.
another movie that I remember and loved the most was Takarajima Ensei/Peach Boy. I never expected IMDB to have it but it did, only that the description of the movie wasn't complete. I think the movie was based on a Japanese folklore where a child was inside a huge peach fruit and it came flying into a house of a childless elderly couple. The peach broke into two and there came out a little boy who was then raised by the couple as if he was their very own. and then years passed, the peach boy set out on a quests to a mountain. Along the way, he gained unlikely friends with magical powers: A dog, a monkey and a bird. I remember he fought against the Gensing Man, but that's about the best I could remember. (God, how I wish I could get my hands on that film!) We have that Japanese story though in our Childcraft books, the boy's name was Momotaro, the Little Peach Boy and the story was called The Island Of The Ogres.
any of it sounds familiar?
My dad used to rent a lot of movies. We'd watch like 5 to 8 movies a week and that's quite expensive in the 80s. How I'd love to watch Ewoks again. The Battle of Endor, Zee Boyfriend loved this movie and I'd have to wait to watch it, There's also the Return of the Ewok, Ewok Adventure.
Ewoks are so cute. haha. aah.. Quiet. I'm reminiscing my happy childhood. ….
d’original siomai sa Tisa
Thursday, March 1, 2007PEOPLE, stop asking me why I've put on a lot of weight. Dios mio. It's really no secret why.
See, it's because of this:
O yesiree.. that's the culprit so don't blame me. heh.
I know you want some… That's D'Original Siomai sa Tisa. No, not the Fuente ones (the siomai wrappers in those are long detached from the meat, so that's why it's not as good as the one that you buy directly from Tisa).
Last year, I got so addicted to these babies that almost every week, I'd be there, lining up with the rest of the adis-adis sa siomai.. my appetite for it cannot be satiated. I wonder what the secret ingredient is… hmmm.. singot siguro ni manang nidagayday sa halang nga sauce (in english, maybe the lady sauce maker's sweat would run down her forehead and goes directly to the sauce, that's the secret!). It's not only delish, but it's only for P6/piece. it has become one of the staple diet of Cebuanos. Already branching out to Banawa and Fuente/B. Rodriguez, D'original Siomai brand has already made a name for itself. With an especially extra hot sauce and partner it with Cebu's famous puso or hanging rice, you'll have an inexpensive and delicious budget meal. Or eating it all by itself is just as delightful.
want more?! I know you do.
PALIT IMO!
hahaha!
p.s. they should pay me for this advert. heh.
